The Jeep Cherokee compact SUV is designed for people who are looking to go off-road but don’t want to compromise on their on-road performance. Jeep revived the Cherokee nameplate in 2014 after the production of the iconic Cherokee was halted back in 2001.

Overview

The Cherokee’s 4-cylinder engine feels a little slow. The V6 makes the SUV feel smoother and more agile. The Cherokee is a comfortable SUV on the roads as well as off. This makes it a compelling choice.

Pricing and Trims

Jeep offers the Cherokee in nine trim levels: Latitude Plus, Upland and Trailhawk. Limited, High Altitude, Trailhawk Elite and Overland are some of the options.

The Latitude includes automatic LED headlights and rearlights, LED foglights and power heated side mirrors. The Latitude starts at $25,490

The Latitude Plus features cloth/vinyl seating and 8-way power driver, leatherette steering wheels, leather-wrapped shifter dial, satellite radio, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection and manual-folding side-mirrors with integrated turn signals, courtesy lighting, interior lighting, illuminated vanity and push-button starting. Prices start at $27,145.

Upgrade to the Altitude trim to enjoy similar features to Latitude Plus as well as 18-inch wheels and special black exterior trim bits. The Altitude is priced at $28,140

The Upland comes in a similar design to the entry-level Latitude, but adds off-road suspension and all-terrain tires. It also has a full-size spare tire, an engine oil cooler, and offroad wheel flares. The Upland is available for purchase at $29,475.

The Trailhawk is an offroad-ready vehicle. It has the same equipment as the Latitude Plus, but it features Jeep Active Drive II automatic four wheel drive, Sele-Speed Crawl control, 115-volt power outlet and dual zone climate control. Trailhawk is an off-road-ready vehicle that costs $33,945.

The Limited offers a variety of comfort options, including leather upholstery, power heated front seat, driver seat memory and auto-dimming back view mirrors, heated steering wheel and universal garage door opener. The Limited starts at $31,200

High Altitude includes satellite traffic updates, navigation and HD radio. It also comes standard with 19-inch wheels, gloss-black roof rails, body-color accents, and 19-inch wheels. A High Altitude costs approximately $34,740 to purchase.

The Overland trim is luxurious and features ventilated front seats, heated 2nd-row seats and premium floor mats. It starts at $36,745.

The Trailhawk Elite is a top-of-the-line Trailhawk. It comes with all the Trailhawk’s off-road features, plus many more luxury items such as heated leather front seats, heated steering wheels, motion-activated powerliftgate, and more. The Trailhawk Elite is $37,140.

Performance and Engine

The 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine makes the Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus, Altitude and two-wheel drive Limited 180 horsepower and 171 pounds-feet torque. Trailhawk, Upland and Trailhawk get a 3.2 liter V-6, which produces 271 horsepower, 239 pound-feet torque, and Overland. The turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine in the High Altitude produces 270 horsepower and 295 lb.ft of torque. All engines are equipped with a nine speed automatic.

There are two types of four-wheel drive systems. The Active Drive I system, which is the most suitable for driving on snowy roads, is the first. Trailhawk models come standard with the Active Drive II system, while other trims can be ordered separately. This low-range gearing is best suited to tough off-road conditions. Selec-Terrain dials are available on all four-wheel drive models. This allows the driver to adjust various vehicle systems in accordance to terrain. There are four terrain options: Sport, Snow, Auto and Sand/Mud. Trailhawk models also have a Rock setting.

All models have hill assist. Trailhawk models only have hill descent control. An optional tow package can be added to all models. This allows V-6 models up to 4,500 lbs. The EPA measured the fuel consumption of models equipped with Active Drive I 4WD. The four-cylinder engine is rated at 21 mpg in the city, 28 on the highway, and 24 combined. V-6 models achieve 19/27/22.

Interior

The Cherokee’s interior is modern with a two-tone color scheme, simplified buttons and a simple stack. The gauge cluster is a modern arrangement of two analog gauges and a small digital display that allows the driver to choose from a wide range of information about the vehicle. The interior materials have a pleasant, tactile feel.

It is extremely easy to use the 8.4-inch touchscreen. Contrary to other systems which require multiple taps, the buttons on the screen are simple to use. It is easy to navigate. A knob controller makes it easy to connect a smartphone. It allows you to scroll through the menus.

The interior is very large. The interior is spacious and provides plenty of space for the driver and front passenger. Rear seats can slide forward and back and recline for maximum comfort. The compact SUV category has a great rear seat. The average cargo volume is 54.9 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down.
